Rich Mullins was born on October 21, 1955, in Richmond, Indiana, to a tree-farming father and a Quaker mother. Growing up, he was called by his middle name, Wayne. His great-grandmother taught him to play hymns in four-part harmony, and he began taking classical piano lessons in elementary school. His early music also grew through his role in the New Creations Choir, which toured in a bus, recorded an album, and helped young people connect through music. He graduated from Northeastern High School in 1974 and then attended Cincinnati Bible College while working in a parking garage to pay his way. During that time, he served as youth pastor and music director at a United Methodist church in Kentucky, seeing music more as a hobby than a career—until a life-changing experience at a music festival pushed him to follow his musical calling full time.
Music Career
Rich Mullins began his music career with a deep love for both faith and songwriting. Born on October 21, 1955, in Richmond, Indiana, he learned to play the piano at the age of four, encouraged by his great-grandmother. He later mastered guitar and the hammered dulcimer, instruments that would become part of his unique sound. After attending Cincinnati Bible College, Mullins joined Zion Ministries, a touring worship group, with whom he recorded the 1981 album Behold the Man. This early work set the stage for his transition into a solo career. In 1986, Mullins signed with Reunion Records and released his first solo album, Rich Mullins, marking the beginning of a remarkable period of creativity and influence in contemporary Christian music.
His breakthrough came in 1988 with the album Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth, which included the song “Awesome God.” This anthem quickly became one of the most popular worship songs in churches across America and cemented Mullins’s place in the Christian music world. In the early 1990s, he released The World as Best as I Remember It, Volumes One and Two, featuring “Step by Step,” another worship classic. Volume One was later ranked No. 7 on CCM Magazine’s list of “100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music.” Mullins’s creativity reached new heights in 1993 with A Liturgy, a Legacy, & a Ragamuffin Band, an ambitious album that blended worship, storytelling, and Americana influences. It was praised by critics and ranked No. 3 on the same CCM Magazine list. Around this time, he formed the Ragamuffin Band, a group of close friends and skilled musicians who would accompany him in recordings and tours.
Despite his growing fame, Mullins chose to step away from the spotlight. In 1995, he moved to a Navajo reservation in New Mexico, where he taught music to children. His commitment to service reflected the values that were often present in his songs—humility, simplicity, and compassion. In 1997, Mullins wrote Canticle of the Plains, a musical inspired by the life of St. Francis of Assisi, but set in the Old West. This project demonstrated his talent for blending faith, history, and artistry. Tragically, on September 19, 1997, Mullins died in a car accident at the age of 41, leaving behind a rich musical legacy.
After his passing, his final work was completed by the Ragamuffin Band and released in 1998 as The Jesus Record. The album included Mullins’s raw demo recordings on one disc and polished versions performed by the band and guest artists on another. Even in death, his music continued to touch hearts, with songs that carried deep spiritual meaning and honest reflection. Over the course of his career, Rich Mullins became known not just as a singer and songwriter, but as a poet, teacher, and servant whose music still inspires listeners today.
