Paul Mahern is an American record producer, mixing and mastering engineer, singer, songwriter, professor, and yoga teacher who has worked with a wide range of famous artists including John Mellencamp, Iggy Pop, Willie Nelson, The Fray, Lily & Madeleine, and Neil Young. Over the years, he has built a respected career in the music industry, producing and engineering several gold and platinum albums while earning a reputation for his careful and artistic approach to sound. Alongside his studio work, he is an adjunct lecturer at Indiana University, where he teaches classes on punk rock history and music production, passing on his experience to the next generation of musicians.
Paul Cantwell Mahern was born on September 11, 1963, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was the youngest of eight children in his family. During his early years, he lived in both Indianapolis and Chicago, which gave him different experiences of city life. When he was a teenager, his family moved back to Indianapolis, where he continued his schooling and developed interests that would later influence his path in music.
Paul Mahern first made a name for himself in 1979, at just 17 years old, when he became the frontman of the punk band The Zero Boys. Their debut album, Vicious Circle, became a key work in punk music and brought him early recognition for his powerful energy and stage presence. While still playing with The Zero Boys, he started experimenting with recording music and eventually worked as an engineer at Hit City Recording. He then moved to Bloomington, Indiana, where he recorded music for both local and national artists, including Blake Babies, The Judybats, and others.
As his reputation grew, Mahern collaborated with many well-known artists across different music styles. He worked with John Mellencamp for years, including on Mellencamp’s album No Better Than This, which was recorded using just one microphone and a vintage tape recorder. His credits include engineering The Fray’s 2007 album How to Save a Life, which went double-platinum and was Grammy-nominated. He has also produced or engineered gold and platinum albums for Mellencamp, and worked on several Grammy-nominated songs such as Your Life Is Now, Peaceful World, and Our Country. Over his career, he has worked with a wide range of artists including Iggy Pop, Willie Nelson, Lily & Madeleine, Neil Young, Afghan Whigs, and many more.
In addition to his studio achievements, Mahern has also played a key role in preserving music heritage. He served as the lead engineer for the NEH-funded Sound Directions project at Indiana University’s Archives of Traditional Music. Working with Harvard University, he helped develop best practices for transferring and preserving old audio recordings, including tasks like tape restoration and digitization management.
Since around 2012, he has shared his experience by teaching as an adjunct lecturer at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, offering courses such as the history of punk rock and music production. Additionally, he founded Mahern Audio (and related ventures), offering mixing, mastering, and archival services from his studios in Bloomington, Indiana.
