Michael Joseph Jackson was born on August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, into a working class family with ten children. He was the eighth of ten born to Joseph and Katherine Jackson, and he had many brothers and sisters, including Rebbie, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, La Toya, Marlon, Randy, and Janet. He grew up in a small two bedroom house on Jackson Street. His mother, Katherine, was musical and played piano and clarinet. His father, Joe, worked at a steel mill and played guitar in a local band.
From about age five, Michael joined his older brothers Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine in a band first called the Jackson Brothers. Later his brother Marlon joined, and they renamed themselves the Jackson 5. He quickly became the lead singer thanks to his strong voice and on stage energy.
His father pushed the children hard, making them practice many hours each day. Michael later said he often felt intense fear and isolation as a result. He remembered crying or vomiting before rehearsals because of the stress. Growing up in Gary was a challenge. The family had little money and lived in a crowded home. Despite hardship, the home was filled with music and his mother encouraged singing and creative games, treating music as a family passion.
By mid 1960s, the Jackson 5 won local talent shows and began performing around the Midwest at churches, community halls, and clubs. They built early attention and later won a key contest at the Apollo Theater in New York, which helped them catch Motown’s notice.
Michael Jackson started his solo music career in 1979 with the release of Off the Wall. The album brought him wide praise and sold over 20 million copies, featuring hits like "Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough" and "Rock with You".
In 1982, his Thriller album became the best selling album in history. It sold more than 65 million copies worldwide, stayed at number one for 37 weeks, and gave him seven Top 10 singles. At the 1984 Grammy Awards, Thriller won eight Grammys, a record at the time.
During a TV show in 1983, Michael performed “Billie Jean” and first showed off his famous moonwalk dance. That moment became a turning point in his career and earned him an Emmy nomination.
He followed up with Bad in 1987, which sold over 35 million copies and became the first album with five number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100.
In the 1990s, he released Dangerous in 1991, which included the hit “Black or White.” That song topped charts in over 20 countries and broke records by reaching number one faster than any song since the Beatles’ “Get Back.” He also toured the world, with his Dangerous World Tour and later the HIStory World Tour, drawing millions and earning hundreds of millions in revenue.
Michael was a huge success in sales and awards. He sold over 500 million records worldwide, won 13 Grammy Awards in total, received 26 American Music Awards (more than any other artist), and held many Guinness World Records. He was the most awarded entertainer ever and the best-selling solo artist of all time.
He also used his fame to support people in need. He co-wrote the charity single “We Are the World” in 1985, raising tens of millions to help Africa. He founded the Heal the World Foundation in 1992 and is estimated to have donated over $500 million to various causes during his life.
