Mark Battles is an American hip-hop artist, songwriter, and producer from Indianapolis, Indiana who has steadily built a strong following since 2011. He launched his own indie label, Fly America, releasing standout mixtapes like Good Morning Americaand the Saturday Schoolseries before dropping his debut album Numbin 2015, which charted at number 39 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. His next studio album, Before The Deal(2016), reached number 15 on the Heatseekers chart. Mark has teamed up with artists including Tory Lanez, French Montana, Dizzy Wright, and King Los while racking up over 50 million streams across major platforms. In 2017 he began working under independent management by Coach K of Quality Control Music, pushing him further into the spotlight.

Early life

Mark Battles was born on September 2, 1991, in Indianapolis, Indiana. His mother, Chiffonda Ducking, raised him along with two brothers, Anthony and Carl, and a sister, in an urban area marked by poverty. In his early childhood, the family experienced homelessness and stayed in several shelters.
He began rapping when he was still young, first using a different stage name before eventually choosing “Mark Battles.” He graduated from Pike High School in northern Indianapolis in 2009.
A tragic event occurred on August 31, 2006, when Mark, his sister, and his brother Carl were involved in a car crash near their school. Carl was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. This loss had a lasting impact on Mark and he later paid tribute to Carl in songs such as One For The Money.
From a young age, he was inspired by major hip-hop figures like Big Pun, Eminem, Drake, and 2Pac, which shaped his early interest in creating music.

Musical career

Mark Battles officially began his music journey in 2011, when he founded his own independent label called Fly America and released his first mixtape, Good Morning America. His song “Last Night” gained attention—it came in second place on MTVu and was later remixed by Kid Ink.
Over the next few years, he released more well‑received mixtapes, including the Saturday School series, Walking Distance, Broken Silence(with King Los), and Black Einstein. Walking Distance, featuring artists like Kid Ink and King Los, earned gold status on DatPiff.
On October 2, 2015, his first studio album, Numb, came out independently and reached #39 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip‑Hop Albums chart. His second album, Before The Deal, followed on May 31, 2016, debuting at #15 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. He also partnered with No ID’s ARTium Recordings and launched The Before The Deal Tour.
In nearly the whole of 2016, he toured extensively (including Dizzy Wright’s Still Movin’ Tour) and collaborated with artists such as Dizzy Wright, Locksmith, Futuristic, Ab‑Soul, French Montana, Curren$y, Wale, and Tory Lanez. On May 26, 2017, he released Day 2, a joint album with Tory Lanez under the guidance of Coach K from Quality Control Music.
He released the Vasi World EP in February 2018 and launched a related spring tour. His later work includes the 2023 album Paramountand the 2024 album Do Not Disturb, which recorded millions of streams within 24 hours of release.
Since around 2017, he’s been managed independently by music executive Coach K, earning more than 50 million streams and performing across America, making him one of Indianapolis’s most successful modern hip‑hop artists.
