Freddie Gibbs, whose real name is Fredrick Jamel Tipton, was born on June 14, 1982, in Gary, Indiana. He grew up on the east side of the city, an area known for high crime and poverty. Life in Gary was tough, and these surroundings shaped much of his early personality and future music.
In high school, Gibbs was a talented athlete and earned a football scholarship to Ball State University. However, he was later expelled for missing classes. At the age of 19, he faced legal trouble, including theft and gun charges. As part of a pre-trial program, he joined the U.S. Army and was placed in boot camp. He was discharged after eight months for testing positive for marijuana.
After returning to Gary, Gibbs worked at a local mall. It was there he met a music producer named Finger Roll, who owned the city’s only recording studio. Gibbs joined Finger Roll’s group, No Tamin Entertainment, and began taking music seriously for the first time. These early experiences and struggles heavily influenced the raw, honest style he would later become known for in his music.
Saucy Santana began his music journey in 2019, after years working as a makeup artist for the hip-hop duo City Girls. He released his first song, “Walk Em Like a Dog”, on SoundCloud. That track quickly became a hit, gathering over a million streams in its first week.
In September 2019, Santana dropped his debut EP titled Dog Walkers. Just months later, in January 2020, he released his first mixtape Imma Celebrity. He then appeared multiple times on the TV show Love & Hip Hop: Miami in early 2020, which helped increase his popularity.
Santana’s second mixtape, Pretty Little Gangsta, arrived in July 2020, featuring collaborations with Latto (“Up & Down”) and LightSkinKeisha (“Back It Up”). His songs “Walk”, “Here We Go”, and “Material Girl” all went viral on TikTok during 2021. The track “Walk” inspired a viral #WalkChallenge and earned praise from Nicki Minaj. “Material Girl” received attention from Madonna, who later performed it with him at NYC Pride in 2022; a remix titled “Material Gworrllllllll!” was also released.
On December 16, 2021, Santana released his debut studio album Keep It Playa, which featured the single “Shisha” with City Girls. This release marked a full circle from his earlier role as their makeup artist.
In August 2022, he made his late-night TV debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, performing “Booty.” He also performed the same track at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards pre-show.
In early 2024, Santana joined the cast of Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta in a supporting role before becoming a main cast member in the next season.
