Don Mattingly made fans take notice with his smooth swings and top-notch defense. Over his 14-year playing career with the New York Yankees, he hit .307, collected 2,153 hits, and drove in 1,099 runs. Known as “Donnie Baseball,” he earned six All-Star spots, 9 Gold Gloves, and the American League MVP award in 1985. His steady leadership and consistency made him one of the brightest stars for the Yankees in the 1980s.

Early Life

Donald Arthur Mattingly was born on April 20, 1961, in Evansville, Indiana, as the youngest of five children of Bill and Mary Mattingly. He grew up playing backyard Wiffle ball, where hitting the garage in left field counted as a home run—a game that helped him learn to hit the other way. In high school at Reitz Memorial, he starred in baseball, football, and basketball. His baseball team won 59 straight games and the state championship in 1978. Mattingly’s strong work ethic came from his coach and family values, and even though he had college offers, he chose to sign with the Yankees in the 19th round of the 1979 draft.

Coaching Career

After his playing days were over, Don Mattingly stayed close to the game by joining the Yankees’ staff as a special instructor during spring training from 1997 to 2003. Following the 2003 season, he became the team’s hitting coach. In that role, his guidance helped the Yankees set a franchise record by hitting 242 home runs in 2004. He then moved into the bench coach position in 2007, supporting the manager and helping run the team from the dugout.
Mattingly took his skills to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2008, initially as a special assignment coach, and later that season returned to being the hitting coach. He remained in that role through 2010. In 2011, Mattingly began his first real managing work in the Arizona Fall League, where he managed the Phoenix Desert Dogs, an important step toward managing full time.
He was named manager of the Dodgers starting in 2011. Under his leadership, the team won the National League West three years in a row, from 2013 through 2015. They made the playoffs each of those years but did not reach the World Series, losing in the National League Championship Series in 2014 and in the Division Series in 2015.
In late 2015, Mattingly accepted a managerial position with the Miami Marlins. He led the team through 2022. One of his most significant achievements was guiding the Marlins to the postseason in 2020, earning him National League Manager of the Year honors that year.

Managerial Career

Don Mattingly began managing in the Arizona Fall League in 2010, guiding the Phoenix Desert Dogs before stepping into the major league spotlight in 2011. He took over as manager for the Los Angeles Dodgers and led the team to a winning record in his first season despite off-field turmoil. Under his leadership, the Dodgers won three straight National League West titles and made the playoffs each year from 2013 to 2015, marking the first time in franchise history they had done so. He finished his Dodgers tenure in 2015 with a strong 446–363 record, a .551 winning percentage, which ranks second-highest among all Dodgers managers, and became the first manager in Dodgers history to lead the team to three consecutive postseason appearances.
Mattingly moved on to manage the Miami Marlins starting in the fall of 2015, under a four-year contract. In his first season, he guided the Marlins to 79 wins, their best performance since 2010, and earned a fifth-place finish in the NL Manager of the Year voting. The 2020 shortened season saw the Marlins reach the playoffs for the first time since 2003, winning the National League Wild Card, and Mattingly was named the NL Manager of the Year.
Over seven seasons in Miami, Mattingly became the longest-serving manager in Marlins history and earned the most managerial wins for the franchise. Despite a challenging environment marked by rebuilding efforts and roster changes, he brought stability and focus to the team. His tenure ended following the 2022 season, as both he and the organization agreed it was time for a new voice in leadership.
