Biography
Darnell Carlton, better known as Crunchy Black, was born in Indiana in August 1974 and grew up in Memphis, Tennessee. He rose to fame as a key member of the influential hip-hop group Three 6 Mafia, which formed in 1991 and became the first rap group to win an Oscar for Best Original Song in 2006.
Crunchy became known for his unique dance style called “G Walking,” which he popularized at Club Memphis and helped define the group’s stage presence. He contributed to several key Three 6 Mafia albums such as Mystic Stylez, Da Unbreakables, and Most Known Unknown.
In 2006, after the Oscar win, Crunchy Black left Three 6 Mafia due to financial disagreements with DJ Paul and Juicy J, and a desire to pursue solo music independently. Shortly afterward, On My Ownand From Me to Youwere released though the latter was issued without his approval, which hurt his reputation at the time.
After leaving the group, he launched a solo career and later founded the label Hard Hittaz Money Gang under Strukk World Entertainment. In later years, Crunchy Black joined Da Mafia 6iX, a new collective formed with former Three 6 Mafia members such as DJ Paul and Koopsta Knicca.
In 2015, Crunchy Black faced legal issues, pleading guilty to drug possession and domestic violence charges, leading to a prison sentence of seven months. Despite setbacks, he returned to music in the following years, releasing new solo material and performing live again.
Crunchy Black is recognized as an early pioneer in Memphis rap. His G Walking dance, Oscar milestone, and solo persistence mark him as a distinctive and enduring figure in Southern hip-hop history.
