Born William Bruce Rose Jr. on February 6, 1962, in Lafayette, Indiana, he rose from a troubled childhood to form one of the most influential bands of the 1980s. In 1987, Guns N’ Roses released Appetite for Destruction, featuring hits like "Sweet Child o’ Mine", which launched them to worldwide fame. Axl’s powerful vocals, stage presence, and unique style set him apart as a rock star from early on.
Axl Rose was born William Bruce Rose Jr. on February 6, 1962, in Lafayette, Indiana, to a teenage mother, Sharon, and a father who left before Axl was born. His parents separated when he was about two years old, and he was briefly taken by his father then returned to his mother’s care. His mother married Stephen Bailey, who became his stepfather and gave him the surname Bailey. Axl had a sister named Amy and a half‑brother Stuart.
Life at home was difficult. The household was very strict and religious, attending Pentecostal church services many times each week. Axl later spoke of physical abuse from his stepfather and tight religious rules, which made his childhood feel oppressive.
Despite hardship, Axl found comfort in music. He began singing in church at age five and performed with his siblings in a group called the Bailey Trio. Later, in school, he joined the chorus and studied piano, developing different vocal styles during choir practice. By age 17, Axl discovered that his stepfather was not his biological father. He changed back to the name William Rose but used the name W. Rose instead, as he did not want to share his first name with his father. Around this time he also began having legal troubles in his hometown, with over twenty arrests for public intoxication and battery. Eventually, he left Lafayette for Los Angeles in December 1982.
Growing up in a troubled and unstable household shaped Axl’s voice and songwriting. It gave him emotional depth and a strong need for self‑expression, which later became central to his music and lyrics.
Axl Rose started his professional music career in the early 1980s after moving to Los Angeles. In 1985, he co-founded the band Guns N’ Rosesby joining forces with other local musicians. The lineup soon included Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan, and Steven Adler. Together, they built a reputation in the LA rock scene for their powerful live performances and rebellious style.
In 1987, the band released their first album, Appetite for Destruction, which became one of the most successful debut albums of all time. It sold over 30 million copies worldwide. The album included major hits like “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Paradise City,”and “Sweet Child o’ Mine,”which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Axl’s powerful voice, along with the band’s mix of hard rock and blues, helped them quickly gain global fame.
Their next major work was the release of two albums at the same time: Use Your Illusion Iand Use Your Illusion II, in 1991. These albums showed more musical variety, combining heavy rock songs with piano ballads and orchestral arrangements. Songs like “November Rain,” “Don’t Cry,”and “You Could Be Mine”became major hits. The band went on a long world tour called the Use Your Illusion Tour, which lasted over two years and included 192 shows across 27 countries. It was one of the biggest and most talked-about rock tours of the 1990s, but it was also known for controversy. Axl was often late to perform, and some concerts ended in riots.
After 1993, the original members started to leave the band, and Axl was the only founding member left. Over the years, he continued working under the name Guns N’ Roses with new musicians. During this period, Axl worked on a long-awaited album called Chinese Democracy. It took more than a decade to finish and was finally released in 2008. The album cost millions to produce and was known for its electronic sounds and deep lyrics. It reached number 3 on the Billboard 200 chart and sold well around the world, even though it received mixed reviews.
From 2001 to 2011, Axl led the Chinese Democracy Tour, performing the new music along with classic hits. He remained active in the music scene, though many fans still hoped for a reunion with the original band.

This tour ran from 2016 to 2019 and became one of the highest-grossing tours in history. It earned over $584 millionand brought the band back to sold-out stadiums around the globe.
