Biography

Jimmy Cappswas born on May 25, 1939, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and raised in Benson, NC. He began listening to the Grand Ole Oprywhen he was around eight years old, inspired by his fiddle-playing uncle, Lynn Cook, and local guitarist Hayden Ivey. At age twelve, he started playing guitar, appearing on local radio in Dunn, NC. By 16, he was on television in Florence, SC, and also played in a local band called The Tar Heels.
In 1958, when he was 19, Jimmy tried out for the Louvin Brothersband and was hired. This led to his first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry with them in 1959. He later became a member of the Opry’s house band(staff band) in 1967, where he remained for over five decades, becoming the longest-serving musician in Opry history.
Jimmy was not only a constant presence on Opry stage but also a top session guitarist. He played both acoustic and electric guitar on more than 500 recording sessions a yearat his peak. His guitar work can be heard on many famous songs, including Kenny Rogers' “The Gambler,”Tammy Wynette’s “Stand by Your Man,”George Jones’ “He Stopped Loving Her Today,”Reba McEntire’s “How Blue,”George Strait’s “Amarillo by Morning,”The Oak Ridge Boys’ “Elvira,”Alan Jackson’s “Here in the Real World,”and more.
Jimmy earned many honors for his work. He was named a “Nashville Cat”by the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2012, and in 2014, he was inducted into both the Musicians Hall of Fameand the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame. In 2015, Tennessee’s governor recognized him as a Goodwill Ambassador, and in 2018, the Grand Ole Opry named its rehearsal room the “Jimmy Capps Music Room”in his honor. Later in his career, Jimmy became known as “The Sheriff”on RFD-TV’s Larry’s Country Dinerand also appeared on Country’s Family Reunion.
