Jerry Yarnell, whose full name was Joseph Jerome Yarnell Jr., was born on January 26, 1953, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He grew up there and finished high school in 1971before earning an associate degree from Oklahoma State University. He also studied art at the Philbrook Museum’s art program, although he chose to leave that program early to focus on realistic painting, his true passion.
From a young age, Jerry loved painting. His early art filled his family's home and even appeared in school hallways. He was mentored by a caring high school teacher and spent time in the studio of a local portrait artist, both of whom helped shape his skill and style.
Jerry became known as a master artist who painted landscapes, wildlife, and western scenes in a semi-realist style. He shared his love for art through teaching. He began teaching workshops to many students, and grew to reach thousands worldwide via his PBS TV show “Paint This with Jerry Yarnell,”which began in 1987 and became one of the most watched art shows in the U.S. and Canada.
He also founded the Yarnell School of Fine Artin Skiatook, Oklahoma, and authored 16 instructional bookson painting. His teaching extended online, through DVDs, workshops, and live classes, helping artists at all levels learn and grow.
Beyond art, Jerry was a devoted Christian, licensed minister, and pastor. He balanced his artistic career with his faith, often blending the two in his life and work.
