Ethan Penner was born and raised in Yonkers, New York, in a working-class family. His parents were divorced when he was young. His father was a rabbiand became known as the youngest rabbi in the American Jewish conservative movement. Ethan’s mother filled their home with books, which helped him develop a strong love for reading from an early age. Growing up with limited money but surrounded by ideas and knowledge, he learned to think deeply and question things around him. As a child, he had a heavier build and was nicknamed “Moo.” During his teenage years, he loved heavy metal musicand even joined fan clubs of bands like Twisted Sister.

Ethan Penner is a well-known name in real estate finance and investment. He began his career at Drexel Burnham Lambert, where he worked as a mortgage-backed securities trader, managing large trades and financial risks. After that, he joined Morgan Stanley, where he helped build the firm’s mortgage credit finance and trading business. His work there played a big role in strengthening Morgan Stanley’s position in fixed-income and mortgage markets.
Later, during the 1990s, Penner joined Nomura Securities, where he became widely recognized for helping to create the Commercial Mortgage-Backed Securities (CMBS)market, a new way to package and sell commercial property loans to investors. Following his success at Nomura, Penner started and led several real estate investment firms.
